Breast Augmentation Risks
Your breast augmentation surgeon will carefully review all
the potential risks and complications of the surgery with
you prior to the procedure. Each individual will be evaluated
to determine any risk factors or potential complications that
can endanger the patient, but every surgical procedure has
risks associated to it that cannot always be predicted. Concerns
of the link between breast augmentations and breast cancer
have been a concern, but there is no direct link. Mammograms
and regular checkups are advised for any woman, but it very
important after a breast augmentation to continue to do so
since the implant can make reading mammograms more difficult.
Implants do have a risk of breaking or leaking as the direct
result of a force hitting the chest area or for no reason.
Once an implant has leaked there is a noticeable difference
in breast size that can be replaced through another surgery.
The saline that leaks into the body is absorbed and poses
no risk.
Anesthesia is used to perform breast augmentations and some
patients may have an adverse reaction to it. Breast augmentations
require incisions, which also runs the risk of infections.
Incisions also create scars after surgery that may tighten
and cause compression. Some cases of what is called capsular
contractures may result in a changed shape and hardened breast
that can be fixed with a surgical procedure that removes the
scarring. A change in breast and nipple sensation is normal
after surgery, but some people will find that it is permanent.
It is important to understand the risks associated with any
surgical procedure like a breast augmentation. Our surgeons
will take every precaution to ensure the safety of every patient.
